Let’s talk self control today – one of the factors impacting eating behaviours and weight loss.
We dive into this area in the Behavioural Change section our coaching certification.
Losing weight sustainably and improving your overall eating habits is impacted by different physiological and psychological factors.
Most know to eat less to lose weight and that they should eat more fruit and vegetables to become healthier.
So why are obesity rates increasing?
Let’s take a deeper look into a common factor that impacts eating behaviours.
Self control is defined as the ability to manage your actions, feelings and emotions.
An example of self control is when you want the last cookie but you use your willpower to avoid eating it because you know it isn’t what your body needs in that moment.
The problem is in those moments you have two two goals whether you know it or not:
The smaller sooner goal > small benefit (instant gratification from eating cookie)
The larger later goal > bigger benefit (weight loss, health, better relationship with food but comes later. You don’t see the weight loss right away)
Self control fails when people choose the smaller temporary benefit.
The short term happiness wins when there is a struggle to resist the temptation. So this means you most likely choose the smaller benefit in the moment, more often.
Such as the instant gratification from eating the cookie.
Instead of considering the larger later goal. Which if you did in time you would see greater weight loss results and an improved relationship with food. It’s not instant results, therefore many people don’t think about it in the moment but it’s critical.
When you feel the temptation to dive into a packet of cookies, drop into awareness mode and think about your larger later goals.
And if you have clients – you definitely want to remind them about what’s important.
- Being able to run around with their kids.
- Reducing diet related health conditions
- Being a healthy weight
- Feeling better in their body
Remember they are much more important that the short term benefit.
Hope that helps today, something to think about especially with a lot of time inside.
Your self control may be compromised even more right now too.
